NaNo 2012--who's in?

Hey gang, I hate to be the bearer of slightly panic-inducing news, but National Novel Writing Month 2012 begins in exactly seven weeks from yesterday. Are you ready to rock? Or are you still on the fence?

Last year, I featured two weeks of guest bloggers who participated in NaNoWriMo. I asked them to share their stories and experiences in a series I named "Write What You NaNo." You can find each entry here. Personally, I think it should be required reading for all NaNoers, but maybe I'm biased.

Anyway, where was I?

Oh, yeah. NaNo 2012. Coming soon to an internet near you... (cue movie announcer voice)

but with a different year, for this years image
I'm ready. Ish. Ready-ish. I think. I mean, my story's going to be a massive pile of poo come Dec 1, but I'm okay with that. My goals for this year are simple:

1. Win.
2. Finish the story.

See, I've won every year, even last year when I went to Ireland for 10 days in the middle of the month and didn't write a single word. Winning I can do. Finishing the story, though? That's where I struggle. I usually quit the minute I hit the elusive 50K mark, leaving my characters and my story in limbo until I dare re-open the file after the New Year.

How about you--are you participating? What's your goal?

  1. I'm still editing my current manuscript, so I probably won't participate this year. I did win it in 2010 though.

  2. I've never done NaNo. I'm too intimidated by the 50K number. That's half a novel for me. In one month? I can only dream of speed like that. :(

But good luck to you. I think it's awesome anyone can kick out that many words in a month.

  3. I've been thinking about it. I've got a SNI I'd like to start writing. I've also got my NaNo from last year that I did finish but haven't had a chance to edit yet. So we'll see.

Why is it that you don't return to the stories after NaNo? Just lack of motivation to sit down and write, or do you lose interest in the story itself? On the Bransforums they had a thread last year where people could challenge themselves and each other to try to continue the pace (the wordcount challenge; there's a Sept one, but doesn't have the same momentum behind it as in December).

  4. Alex--sorry to hear you aren't doing it this year!

LG--I can meet the word goal, but I never said it was good! :) personally though, I like the pressure of a deadline.

Seabrooke--Fir me, I stop in Dec as a "reward" for finishing and them try to finish the story after the new year. Historically, though, I haven't had a complete outline so that has kept me from finishing my story.

  5. I'm in. Presumably anyway. As long as i don't have like another R&R to take up my time. Though i will be a rebel this year and will use NaNo to put in another 50K on my WIP instead of writing something new.

  6. I actually considered skipping it this year to revise a bunch o'stuff but then this shiny new idea started talking to me in the middle of the night and I changed my mind. :)

  7. You know, I may enter this year. I've never liked the idea of Nano, but I really need something to snap me out of the rut I'm in right now.

I love getting comments. They're as much fun as getting real snail mail. So please, chime in and tell me what you think!
